Daily Program

Day 1: Ulanbator
Reception at the airport by our team. Transfer to the hotel. We go after lunch to explore Ulaanbaatar, an amazing city. This Soviet-style city still marked by its history is very much alive today. At the crossroads of Eastern and Western influences, it seems in transition between communist and capitalist economy, nomadic and sedentary lifestyle.
Visits of National Museum of History and of Gandan Monastery, the largest religious center of Mongolia, will provide a clear historical and cultural basis for exploring the country. Evening at the national academy for a traditional songs and dances performance.

Night: in hotel, lunch at restaurant

Day 2: Ulaanbaatar - Khustain Nuruu
Early morning we leave the bustle of the capital to start our adventure across the vast steppe of central Mongolia. By following, an asphalted road, we take off westward and discover stunned our first images of Mongolia: herds of wild horses galloping at the edge of the track, the smoking yurt isolated at the bottom of an irrigated valley … Soon, we taste the pleasures of the dirty road which replace the asphalted road. In the Khustain Nuruu Natural Reserve we expect our first Mongolian meeting. This reserve created to protect rare Mongolian species is known for the successful reintroduction of the legendary horses of Prjewalski. We hike in the heart of Khustai Mountains, to discover the flora and fauna and to observe closely wild horses in their natural environment.
In the afternoon, we visit to the Museum of the reserve in order to deepen our knowledge on the flora and fauna of the region.

Night: in tourist camp, 2-3 h of drive, 3-4 h of hike

Day 3: Khustain Nuruu - Khugnu Khan
Today we join the Khugnu Khan Natural Reserve. This is where the eccentricity of Mongolian nature takesn all its sense. Indeed, there is a strange marriage between the green steppe and a big sand dune planted here as a freak of nature. The sand dune Elsen Tasarkhai is known as the Baga Gobi (Little Gobi) and provides a typical ecosystem of the Gobi Desert.
We acquainted with the first nomadic family of our stay that will host us for the night.
In the afternoon, we hike through the Elsen Tasarkhai sand dune. Our walk in this magical setting combining dune and oasis allows us to familiarize with the desert landscape generally characteristic from southern Mongolia. Then, we reach the majestic Mount of Khugnu Khan. We continue our trek among the strange rocky formations of Khugnu Khan Mount to discover the ruins of the Uvgunt monastery.

Night: in host family yurt, 3-4 h of drive, 3-4 h of hike

Day 4: Khugnu Khan - Orkhon valley
Today, we dive into the heart of the famous Orkhon Valley, the true cradle of Mongolian people, declared World Heritage by UNESCO. The Orkhon Valley is one of the most populated valleys. Its more favourable weather conditions have attracted many nomadic families living on their husbandry.
We cross the valley from east to west in order to reach the encampment of our next family host. We travel across vast grassy plains, interspersed with basalt rocks and surrounded by ancient dormant volcanoes. On our side, Orkhon follows-up its banks, furrows between beds of Edelweiss and steep gorges. Our slow progress on the damaged track leaves us plenty of time to observe the different scenes of nomadic life.
Unexpectedly we find ourselves at the edge of the famous Ulaantsutgalan waterfall. A short walk through the canyon to the foot of the waterfall is worth seeing.

Night: in host family yurt, 4-6 h of drive, 1-2 h of hike

Day 5: Encampment of nomads
In order to understand the real life of Mongolian herders, their constraints such as their pleasures, we spend the day with our host family. Those who wish, participate in various daily tasks of herding: deals with pets, making dairy products, etc. Possibility of a horseback ride in the valley.

Night: in host family yurt

Day 6: Gyatruut Hot water spring

Today, we dive into the heart of the forested mountains that dominate the southern part of the valley. Following a narrow trail that winds through forests of larch, we get to the hot spring of Gyatruut, springing on the side of a high mountain. We will find there two springs (one hot and one very cold) side by side. The source of Gyatruut is famous for its many healing properties. We can enjoy the different basins and the beautiful surroundings in which they operate to relax.

Night: in host family yurt, 6-8 h of hike

Day 7-10: Khuisiin Naiman Nuur Natural Site
The next 4 days we go to explore the beautiful natural site of "Eight lakes." This ancient volcano contains within its vast crater eight alpine lakes in which reflect the shadow of the high forested mountains that surround.
The region has several thousand species of plants and flowers, among which 20% are used for their medicinal virtues. If we are lucky, we might see one of the deer, musk deer, wild boars and wolves that inhabit the area.
It is in this idyllic setting that we hike at our own pace, from lake to lake, with our horses which will carry our luggage. The bravest can swim while others may prefer to try their hand at fishing...

Day 11: Eight lakes - Tuvkhen – Kharkhorin
It is a cultural day ahead us today with a visit of the hermitage of Tuvkhen and the monastery of Erdene Zuu, as well as Kharkhorin the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire.
After saying goodbye to our nomadic hosts we go to visit the monastery of Tuvkhen dating from the seventeenth century. Built on a mountainside on the bottom of the Khangai range, we reach the site by 3-4 km climb on horseback or on foot. Only when we arrived at its foot that we find the monastery perfectly integrated in its natural environment. Immediately, we feel calm, serenity and contemplation emerging from this sacred place, dedicated to the worship of Zanabazar, the first Buddhist spiritual leader of the Mongolians.
We picnic facing a breathtaking view of the mountains of Khangai and the surrounding valleys.
